Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs are often used in conjunction with acupuncture for added therapeutic effect. While many cultures have herbal medicine traditions, the sophistication of Chinese herbal medicine is unsurpassed. Chinese herbal medicine has a long history reaching back several thousand years, and the resulting system is now used to treat everything from the common cold to certain types of cancer.

 

There are thousands of herbs in the Chinese materia medica.  The herbs are classified according to their energetic properties and funcitions;  and the organs, meridians and disharmonies they address. In the practice of Chinese medicine, the individual herbs are combined into formulas, allowing herbs to work synergistically   toward a particular and intended effect on th body.  In order to create the most effective formula, the individual herbs are selected and dosages adjusted  according to their purpose within the formula.  Through their combination, the effectiveness of the individual herbs is enhanced and  unwanted side effects are minimized. 

You will  receive a formula that has been tailored to your condition and particular presentation.   At each appointment Deborah reviews the effect the herbs have had on you, so that  the choice and dosage of the individual herbs comprising the formula can be further refined.  

Chinese herbs are traditionally considered safe in the practice of  East Asian medicine. It is important to follow instructions regarding preparation and dosage and to let Deborah know of any unanticipated or unpleasant effects associated with the herbs, so she can further modify the formula to suit your presentation.  It is also important that you keep her informed and up to date on any other supplements or medications you are taking.
